12th - 13th November

In todays lesson, we uploaded all our clips from the HD video camera to the  iMac upstairs in the editing suite. My group and i realised that there are a few flaws present in the clips that we filmed on Saturday that just went (10th november). With the help of the review from my Media studies teacher, we established that there were too many long shots and medium shots. For example the first clip we filmed while the main character is walking excitedly with his Olympic Ticket, there are two trees in the way in the middle of the screen which gives the audience the impression that theres some emphasis to those trees when all in fact theres no importance in the trees being there at all, its just that the road was curved and we couldn't film the scene without getting the trees in the way as it is, without stepping out on to the busy road and putting our lives at risk.

Also, with the feedback we recieved, we were told to use more close up shots of the main characters behaviour in order to add to the comdey aspect of our film. The fact that in all main comedies have various close up shots of their facial expression while they are doing something mischievous for example in Mr Bean there are countless close up shots that empaphises this.

We also discussed that we need to use different angles to discuss different perspectives of the character. This is so that the audience can understand who and what the character is about. Also, if we was to continue filming in the current way we are filming now then it would be difficult for the audience to understand what is even happening within the short film, so have a variety of angles would mean that it would make it easier for the audience to understand and relate back to the comedy aspect that is taking place within the short film. While filming on Saturday, we also realised that there was a few holes in our previous planning.

As we met up on Saturday we made ways to Pudding Mill Lane in order to film the very last scene which will be using for our credits of the Olympic sight however as we arrived there we soon discovered that the long pathway in which people would take to get a view of the Olympic Stadium was now closed for renovation; this was a major let down for us because we wasted valuable time making our journey there and to end up finding out that we could not get access to this place. So in todays lesson we decided that we would need to change this scene as it would be difficult for us to do it. We decided to use another scene instead which we could use for our very last scene of the credits rolling.

Also, we established another issue of the scene with the taxi driver as our driver backed out last minute. This left us in a bit of a pickle as we were thinking about what to do for a while but we could not come up with another 'plan B' driver so we decided to change this scene and get the main character to use some sort of 'Barclays bike' in order to keep simplicity. We decided to keep the previous pre production doccuments intact as we could use this for effective evaluation.

6th November

Today within this lesson we are talking about filming purposes, we will be filming towards this week furthermore confirming characters. We have decided that i would be playing the role of the taxi driver and Akikul will be playing the main character. Kalam will be filming most of the short film however we will be be offering our help, advice and guidance. We are also working on making our pre production folder more effective and trying to gain a better grade on pre production folder. However we ended up with a outstanding issue of where we are going to get a car from so that the we can proceed with the taxi drivers scene. After much contemplation we have decided to ask one of our friends if he can help us out, if that fails then Akikuls aunty will be the 'Plan B' option and if that fails then we will just have to film the main character getting into a stationary car and filming a conversation taking place within the stationary car however having a shot reverse shot while the conversation is taking place so that we can make it seem like the car is moving by editing in some sound effects of a moving car along with some natural sounding background effects. We also sorted out costumes as we will be providing it ourselves for example the security guards which we will be playing ourselves (me if our taxi driver actor dosent back out) will be wearing all black like wearing a black shirt and black trouses which we all have however we will have to get high visability jackets from the performing arts depatment.

We also sorted out costumes for the taxi driver as they would be wearing a sort of tradiotional clothing known as 'punjaab'. We have chosen this costumer for the taxi driver because it is mainly stereotyped by many people that older asian men become taxi or cab drivers. So, taking advantage of this stereotype we have decided to use it as it would help contribute to the cultural theme we have embeded throughout our short film.

This is a sort of 'Mr Bean' outfit that has been replicated through a more modern comedy that has just been released. We have arranged that our main character will be wearing a costume that looks like this in order to help enhance the comedy aspect within our short film as it would portray the main charaqcter as being a typical asian person from abroad.

This is an image (or similar) of the costume that our female character which will be wearing during the day dream. This was inspired by the 'Big Bang Theory' extract that we as a group have watched and that i have previously uploaded onto my blog. This idea of this costume being used is because in most indian films there is a sort of day dream where a women wearing this sort of clothing ends up singing a love song or dancing. This contributed to our ideas because again it runs through the asian culture.

This is what we our friends who will be acting for us to wear this. We got this idea because, practically everywhere you go this is the base of what security guards uniforms are. Even within the college (Leyton sixth form) the security guards dress like this. So this is the reason why we as a group have decided to have our security gueards dress up like this. The high visability jackets may be hard to obtain for the shoot of the film as they might he booked out for other peoples short films however if it is booked out then the blacked out look of the black shit, trouses and shoes will do just fine for this scene.

Short clip BIG BANG THEORY - INSPIRATION

with regards to our ideas about a comedy aspect that will run through our short film, this short clip from 'The Big Bang Theory'. This inspired us to insert a scene like this on to the bus which will include the main character. The main concept of this extract of which we will interpret the use of culture through music to express a person's emotions or feelings in this case, love. Also it shows us how the person he has fallen for is expressed in different various scenarios.

Research and Planning task

Research and planning

-What research did you carry out into similar products and your potential target audience? I in your answer you need to refer to aspects of your case studies that were useful as research for your own production (similar products) and the feedback you received from the class when you pitched your treatment (potential target audience). Be really specific about which elements from the case studies and feedback, you included.

As a group we carried out research into similar products that already exist and are successful for example looking in to known comedies like ’Mr Bean’.  We felt that the physical aspect of ‘Mr Bean’ appealed to us as a group as we really liked the way he dressed and the non diegeting sound that was incorporated into his character. We spent time analysing the camera effects and the overall profound effects it had on its audience.  For example the close ups of his facial expressions and the ‘stupid’ noises he would make; a prime example of this would be in the episode of which he takes the test and is stuck and tries everything to get the answers from the person sitting next to him.  My group and I decided to try use the aspect of comedy because we felt that being from an Asian background we could try exploiting the comedy aspect from it. When we presented this idea to the rest of the class the feedback we received was very positive as no one has done anything like Mr Bean itself and it’s been years since the last episode was made, as we would try and replicate some of the features of the programme like his very childish attitude for example in the episode when he was in the park and he has a competition in making a sandwich but uses a live fish in his sandwich.  Also from the first film the was called ‘Bean’, his attitudes and a variety or personalities are reflect strongly here for example the childish attitude when he learns to put his middle finger up and being very grown up in certain situations like when he felt guilty for making the character lose his job and he tried to replicate the painting of the ‘Mona Lisa’.

The audience whom we have gathered feedback from recommended that we get some professional actors in order to perform this short film as it would be very hard to try to replicate this effectively. We decided that we will need 6 to 7 characters; the main guy, the taxi driver, the security guard, the random people on the street he bumps into and also the girl he sees on the bus. We put up a notice in the performing arts department confident that we would have got some replies however we got no replies as no one was interested. Taking matters into our own hands we decided to act the short film out ourselves, we understand how hard it is to effectively pull this off so we know what we have to do to get it done. For some additional parts in the short film we had to make some phone calls in order to get some of our friends involved in acting in our short film. We also dived the job roles according to who’s more comfortable e.g. Akiqul was more comfortable with doing the storyboard because he felt that he was confident in getting it done because he believed in his artistic skills. I did the recce and risk assessment and release forms because I felt that I could get this all done in one lesson while everyone else was continuing with the bulk of the job, while Kalam did the script as it was a very short task seeing as most of it consisted of non-diegetic sound. The storyboard was mainly taken on board by akiqul we have decided this because he use to this and has filmed before so he has made a storyboard in the past. However he did not just do all the work before he made the story board we have discussed how and what the shot types would be.  The taxi driver will need to be able to drive and look older to make it realistic so we decided we either get an older relative out of us that is ready to act or we get an older friend that would participate; the locations were made when we were deciding what the play was going to be.

Overall, the time management between us as a group could have been more effective. The problems we faced when we came up with our story board and script was that there were times when some of our pupils weren’t in due to illness so it was hard to come up with the storyboard and script using two people because it meant less ideas. The improvements I would make are to take more time on the scripts and the storyboard and make sure it is at a sufficient level of perfection. Also, to improve on our time management I would say that we could have had more media work related contact in order to discuss our ideas further to try and evaluate our work and get better ideas.

During our team meetings in lesson, our lessons we were each set out separate jobs to do; and we were also given these jobs according to how comfortable we were with it as we divided it equally. During my free time I would do the jobs I was entitled to do. However when I was not in the company of doing these activities I would busy myself in helping to see if my other group members were fine and would contribute any helpful suggestions. In general, I would say my research and planning task in well presented as I have produced it onto Microsoft word and will pursue to present it on to a more interactive ‘prezzi’.
